Michael Shumate

Michael Benjamin Shumate, 58, known to family and friends as Mike or Michael "B" passed away June 7, 2013 after a courageous battle with lymphoma.

Mike was a loving husband to Julia Meche Shumate for 21 years and a 32 year employee of the Hyatt in Atlanta, Ga. Mike was born in Anchorage, Alaska on July 13, 1955 to his parents, Donald Benjamin Shumate Jr. and Patricia Etcher (deceased). He was raised in Jacksonville and graduated from Jacksonville High School in 1973. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy and served for four years. He then began a career with the Hyatt Regency, Atlanta, Ga.

He is survived by his wife, Julia of Atlanta, Ga.; parents, Ben and Rita Shumate of Wilmington; brother, Sonny Shumate of Jacksonville; sister, Emily Shumate of Wilmington; and stepsiblings Tresa Bedson and Mike and Mark Marquez. He also leaves behind many brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and nephews and all the employees of the Hyatt. His wife was born in Peru and he was cherished by his extended Peruvian family. Mike was an extraordinary person and will be missed by all that knew and loved him. Funeral services were held Sunday, June 9th at 3:30 p.m. in the chapel of A. S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home, Decatur, Ga.
