Robert Bridges Jr.

Major Robert (Bob) Bridges, USMC Retired, died Friday, Jan. 17, 2014, at his home in Stella, surrounded by his loving family.

Bob was born May 9, 1933, in San Antonio, Texas, to Robert and Frances McClendon Bridges. He was a career Marine who proudly served his country through two wars (Korean and Vietnam). Retiring in 1976, he settled in Stella, on the White Oak River. Bob is predeceased by his daughter, Rachel Bridges; and his brother, Allen Bridges.

He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Irene Sommer Bridges; and children, Kerry Bridges, Indianapolis, Ind., Byron (Mary) Bridges of Asheville, Nancy Bridges of Nebo, Laurie (Jeff) Jones of Hilton Head, S.C., Bobby (Kimberly) Bridges of Hubert; and six grandchildren, Colton, Lexsie, John, Cole, Ben and Sarah; as well as sister, Ida Fritz of Granbury, Texas; brother, John Bridges of Rockport, Texas; and sister-in-law, Kathy (Allen) Bridges of Dripping Springs, Texas.

Bob was an avid Texas Longhorn fan throughout his life. His hobbies included woodworking, golf, military history and the outdoors as well as countless trips traveling across the country to visit friends and family. He was also a proud lifelong member of the NRA.

Services will be held at St. Mildred's Catholic Church, Swansboro, on Saturday, Jan. 25, with the visitation for friends and family at 10 a.m., a scripture service officiated by the Rev. Donald Baribeau at 11 a.m., and Military Honors at graveside immediately following at the Seaside Cemetery, Swansboro.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to St. Mildred's Building Fund or Community Home Care & Hospice.
