Verlyn Willard Rayome, 89, of Maysville, passed away early Sunday morning, Jan. 12, 2014, at Premier Nursing and Rehab of Jacksonville.
Verlyn was born in Port Edwards, Wis., on Oct. 22, 1924. He served for 30 years and fought in three major wars, WWII, The Korean War, and the Vietnam War and retired as a Chief Petty Officer in the U.S. Navy. He lived in Portsmouth, Va., for 30 years and spent much of his time volunteering and serving his community with the U.S. Navy Hospital Pharmacy and the soup kitchen in Portsmouth, Va., and volunteered for many PGA golf tournaments in the Tidewater area. He was also a long time member of the American Rose Society, Tidewater Rose Society, and the VFW.
Verlyn is preceded in death by his parents Irving J. and Helida Gagnier Rayome; brothers, Reuben, Frank, and Ardin Rayome; and his sister, Ardean Rayome Kranszusch.
He is survived by his wife, Lola Sutton Rayome of the home; sister, Dolores Rayome Bender of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.; stepdaughters, Danae Fiel Marotta, Deborah Fiel Donivan, Stephanie Fiel Larkin, Susan Fiel Teachout, and Linda Fiel Moody; 10 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
