Bettie Ruth Henry Mayfield, 82, celebrated her homecoming July 2, 2014.
Bettie was born to James Cornell and Eunice White Henry on Nov. 21, 1931 in Avondale Estates, Georgia. She was an avid sports fan, always cheering for the Atlanta Braves and she enjoyed a good book almost as much as she enjoyed a cup of coffee with a friend. She was a skilled artisan, sharing her knitting, crocheting and macramé with friends and family. She also protected and cared for a herd of animals throughout her life. She is pre-deceased by her parents and youngest son, Thomas Franklin Mayfield in 2009.
Bettie is survived by her daughter, Shirley Mayfield from Oak Island; her son, James Mayfield from Arlington, Texas; granddaughter, Courtnie Mayfield of Dallas, Texas; grandson, Ross Mayfield, of Arlington, Texas; and daughter-in-law, Susan Mayfield of Russellville, Arkansas. She enjoyed the company of dear friends, Dot Wilson, Ann Robinson, Wanda Dick, Marion Casen, Susan Mylod, Susan Hare and Cindy Mullins as well as her friends at MWR on Camp LeJeune and her faithful pup, Fanci.
The family wishes to extend our sincere appreciation to staff at the Kempton in Wilmington, the nurses and staff at the Emergency Department and 6th, 7th and 10th floors at New Hanover Regional Medical Center and the care given by the staff at the Brunswick Hospice House.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the dementia or Alzheimer's Care organization of your choice or to the Brunswick Hospice House in Bolivia, NC.
