Doris E. Kanavel, died at her home in Hubert on Feb. 11, 2013, the day before her 94th birthday.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 16 at Queen's Creek United Methodist Church, Hubert, with the Rev. Rachel Moser and Rev. Jim Pearson officiating. The family will greet friends following the services.
Trained as a cosmetologist, and beauty school instructor in Norfolk, Va. Doris met a dashing young Navy corpsman, Jack R. Kanavel, and fell in love. In 1941, her career as a Navy wife and mother began. From 1945-47, she served as Hostess coordinator at the Jacksonville USO. She proudly attended the Jacksonville USO's 75th Anniversary celebration in 2012.
In 1962, she became director of the teen center at Marston Pavilion, Camp LeJeune and MYF Director at Queens Creek UMC.
Respectfully known as "Mrs. K" she retired as supervisor - Gottschalk Marina, Camp LeJeune MCB in 1982, following a long record of community service.
As an American Red Cross volunteer for over 30 years. She became certified as an instructor in water safety, first aid and small craft. She taught sailing in the summer program at the Marina until age 82. For 30 years she was active with the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Swansboro Flotilla, 20-10.
In 1990, she organized the Starlight Ballroom Dance Club of Jacksonville.
She survived by her daughter, Jacquelyn Kanavel Manning, and husband, Raymond of Hubert and Richmond, Va.; son, Glenn Kanavel and wife, Sharon of Hubert; grandchildren, Jennifer Manning of Richmond, Va., and Anthony Kanavel and wife Shannon, and her precious great grandson, Jack Thomas Kanavel, all of Hubert.
