Swansboro, NC – Gary Warren Batten, 67, passed away on Aug. 21, 2014.  He was a caring father and grandfather.

Gary was born in Crockett, TX, Feb. 10, 1947 to the late William Batten and Edna Earle Bruce. Gary began his military career at the age of 16, joining the U.S. Coast Guard in 1964 serving until 1970.  He then joined the U.S. Marine in 1970 and served there until 1987.  Upon retiring as a Gunnery Sergeant from New River Air Station, he continued the same duties for 18 years under Civil Service, Cherry Point, N.C. After retiring from civil service, he became a licensed Ham Radio Operator with the Onslow County Ham Radio Club, Swansboro, N.C. KK4BYY.

Gary received an award from the Fleet Readiness Center East, Cherry Point, NC for completing 40 years of service with the federal government.

Surviving are his son, John R. Batten and his wife, Shannon of Jacksonville; granddaughter, Madison Batten and grandsons, Michael and Steven all of Jacksonville; daughter, Laura Lea Batten of Houston, Texas; sister, Sammye Cox and her husband, John of Conroe, Texas; stepchildren, Mike Schultz, Eddie Schultz, Kevin Schultz, Danny Schultz, Michael St. Clair and Anthony St. Clair; 13 stepgrandchildren and longtime companion and special friend, Jackie Kleszczewski.

The family will receive friends, Monday, Aug. 25, 2014 at 10 a.m. at Jones Funeral Home, Jacksonville with funeral services following at 11 a.m.  Burial will follow with full military honors at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, Jacksonville, N.C.
