Joseph Wellspeak, 55, of Swansboro, passed away Tuesday, March 4, 2014, at his home.
Born in Onslow County, on July 28, 1958, he was a son of Lucille Buckmaster Wellspeak of Swansboro and the late Gerald James Wellspeak. He was a graduate of Swansboro High School, UNCW with a degree in Business and Marketing, Georgia Tech with an engineering degree, and then obtained a Law Degree from Franklin Pierce Law Center and most recently worked for MarketCast. He was a member of the N.C. State Bar Association and St. Mildred Catholic Church. Joe was a certified Master Diver, an avid sailor, and loved anything salt water related.
Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife, Karen Delaine Burr Wellspeak, of the home; a son, Walter F. Hancock III and wife Sherrie, of Swansboro; two brothers, Greg Wellspeak and wife Claire, of Annapolis, Md., David Wellspeak, of Swansboro; and three grandchildren, Olivia Hancock, Austin Comeaux, and Erin Comeaux.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 8 at St. Mildred Catholic Church with Father Donald Baribeau officiating.
A Celebration of Joe's Life will follow at 1 p.m. at The Octagon House in Cedar Point.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a Memorial Fund for Joseph Wellspeak for Duke Cancer Center, c/o First Citizens Bank, P.O. Box 128, Swansboro, NC 28584.
Joe's motto in life was: "You should never be proud of doing what's right. You should just do it."
