George Lee Brown, 69, of Jacksonville, passed away on Monday, March 3, 2014.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 7 in the Jones Funeral Home Chapel, Jacksonville with Military Honors. Pastor Mike Schwalm will be officiating.
George was born in Royston, Ga, and was the son of the late George Allen and Gracell Traylor Brown. Shortly after graduating high school in Royston, George enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, attending basic training in Parris Island, S.C. He served his country honorably, including multiple tours of duty in Vietnam, ultimately attaining the rank of Warrant Officer. George retired from the Marine Corps with the rank of Captain in 1986, after a twenty year career. George subsequently became a commercial fisherman and clam digger, both of which he enjoyed dearly. He also loved coaching youth sports and tending to his extensive garden, while sneaking in daily games of Gin Rummy online.
George is survived by his wife of 30 years, Wendy Winker Brown of the home; one son, Jason Brown of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; two sisters, Brenda Ann Phillips of Royston, Ga., and Jane Jones of Greenwood, S.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for Memorial Donations be made to Centerview Baptist Church Building Fund, 1165 Piney Green Rd. Jacksonville, NC 28546.
A gathering of family and friends will be from 10:30 till 11:00 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
