A gentle heart, faith in God and compassion for children were the cornerstones of Elsie ""Marie"" Marshburn Whaley's life. Marie, a devoted wife, mother and ""Nana"", received her heavenly reward when she entered into eternal rest on March 24, 2014.
The Guest Book is expired.
Marie was born Sept. 30, 1919, to the late Andrew and Claudia Canady Marshburn. She married the love of her life, Tom Marvin Whaley, in 1935, and together they had one daughter, Linda Rosemary Whaley Gurganus, who was the light of their lives. Both Tom and Rosemary preceded Marie in death.
Marie was a lifelong resident of Onslow County where for more than 20 years she was an in home childcare provider. She was affectionately known as ""Nana"" to the many children she cared for. They were family to her and she loved and cherished them all. The wisdom she imparted and the love she so freely gave has played a defining role in all of their lives. She will live on through each of them and will be forever missed and loved.
Marie is survived by her brother, Andrew Hugh Humphrey of Greenville; her sister, Yvonne Humphrey of Ayden; a special cousin, Janet Rhodes; and those who lovingly knew her as ""Nana.""
A service honoring Marie's life will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 28 at Johnson Funeral Home in Jacksonville with Jimmy Horne officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at the Whaley family cemetery.
