Jacksonville - Captain Howard J. Christenson, USMC (Retired), Ed.D., passed away March 29, 2014 at Liberty Commons Assisted Living Center Hospice. Graveside services will be held 12 p.m. Tuesday at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery with full military honors.

Howard was born Sept. 6, 1924 in Clarks Grove, Minn. He was a veteran of World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict. After retirement, Howard earned a masters degree in administrative services and a doctorate in education. He was a faithful, hard-working husband to Addie Pearl Boykin Christenson who predeceased him. He was a loving father to Lynda Conway of Glenmont, N.Y., Kathy Bergman of Loveland, Colo. and Mark Christenson of Jacksonville who survive him. Howard is survived by three grandchildren, Amelia Chapman, Rebecca Ellison and Phillip Conway. He also leaves two great-granddaughters, Inara and Elsa Chapman. Howard will be missed by his colleagues at the Marine Corps Food Service School formerly at Montfort Point and by many Marines who sat at his mess hall tables during the 32 years that he served our country.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Liberty Hospice, 3045A Henderson Drive, Jacksonville, N.C. 28546.
