Jacksonville – Thurmon Shepard, 84, died at Onslow Memorial Hospital on May 14, 2014.

Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 20 at Jones Funeral Home Chapel in Jacksonville, with the Rev. Drew Parker officiating. Interment will follow at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery with Military honors.
Thurmon was survived by his wife of 58 years, Doris Gurganus Shepard of Jacksonville; daughter, Gaye Gillette and husband Kenny of Hubert; one son, Marty Shepard and wife Karen of Jacksonville; four grandchildren, Deanna Riley and husband James, Evan Shepard and wife Britta, Matthew Gillette and Daniel H. Gillette; and one great-granddaughter, Haidynn Riley.
Thurmon was preceded in death by his parents, Guthrie Shepard and Bertha Florence of Jacksonville; and three sisters, Clara Sholar, Dorothy Griffin and Helen Wheeler.
He served in the United States Army 43rd Division.
Thurmon has been a member of Harris Creek Missionary Baptist Church since 1949, where he served as a deacon for 60 years.
Thurmon retired after 34 years from civil service at Camp Lejeune. Thurmon was a member of Lafayette Lodge #83 for over 50 years. He was also a member of the Sudan Shrine for over 50 years where he served as a road runner, transporting children to the hospitals. Thurmon loved his farming and raising cattle.
Whether you called him Thurmon, Daddy, Papa, Uncle Buddy, Uncle Biggun, Shep, Brother or and Friend, he was loved and respected by those whose life he touched. Thurmon was a true friend that will be missed by all.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 19 at Jones Funeral Home in Jacksonville.
