JACKSONVILLE - Janet Thompson Merkle, 70, of Jacksonville, died Monday, July 7, 2014, at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 10 at Brookwood Baptist Church with the Rev. Rick Beacham officiating. Burial will follow at Onslow Memorial Park.
Mrs. Merkle was a retired educator with the Onslow County School System. She taught for 29 years and spent almost the entirety of her career at Parkwood Elementary. In addition to her love of teaching, she was a very devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph J. Merkle; and parents, Kirby Dew Thompson and Mary Edna Ellis Thompson.
Survivors include her son, Jeff N. Stegall of Jacksonville; daughter, Patricia M. ""Trish"" Wagner and her husband, Keith of Jacksonville; sister, Kay Thompson Damino and her husband, David of Dublin, Ga.; six grandchildren, Mary Stegall, Elizabeth Stegall, Katelyn Wagner, Lauren Wagner, Seth Wagner and Teddy Joe Cox; and one nephew, Kirby D. Wall.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday evening at Jones Funeral Home, Jacksonville Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Jacksonville Breakfast Lions Club, P.O. Box 7116, Northwoods Station, Jacksonville, NC 28540.
