New Bern | Mary Elizabeth Pugh Miller passed away peacefully at The Courtyards at Berne Village on July 18, 2014. She was born on May 20, 1927 to the late Vera Styron and Robert Evans Pugh. She and Dr. Roy A. Miller were married in 1947. Known to her family and friends as Mary Lib, she graduated from New Bern High School and Mars Hill College. One of her happiest accomplishments was to serve as one of the organizers of the Elder Bears, which is the New Bern High School Alumnae Group for the Class of 1944.

She served as a community volunteer with the New Bern Woman's Club-Youth Services Division as well as the Trent Woods Garden Club. In addition, Mrs. Miller once served as Scrap Amalgam Chairman for the North Carolina Dental Society. In her later years, she served as a Volunteer for Meals on Wheels. As a member of First Baptist Church for over 80 years, she served as one of the teachers of the Mary Martha Sunday School Class until she retired due to her illness.

She is survived by her daughters, Mary Beth Harper and her husband, Jim Harper of Jacksonville, and Jenny Lynn Miller Tolson and her husband, Ken Tolson of Charlotte; her granddaughter, Jamie Harper Wilkerson and her husband, John Robby Wilkerson of Cary as well as her niece and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Roy A. Miller, son, Roy Augustus Miller III and sisters, Dot Pugh Spence and Patty Pugh.

Services will be held at First Baptist Church, 239 Middle Street, New Bern on Monday, July 21 at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

The family would like to express their appreciation to Denice Daigle, Shauna Kelley, Lottie Simmons, Devin Rouse, Barbara Wright, April Boston, Elizabeth Gray and Nicole Tucker of The Courtyards at Berne Village for all thier love and care during her residence. The excellent healthcare, advise, and comfort provided to Mary Lib and her family during her declining health by Larue Robison of Coastal Carolina Health Center is also greatly appreciated.
