James Martin "Cigar" Taylor, 86, of Richlands died August 21, 2014 at his home.
He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
James was born in Rutherfordton, February 28, 1928 to the late Martin and Ellen Wilson Taylor and was also preceded in death by his great-granddaughter, Alyssa.
James was a member of the Long Creek Masonic Lodge #205 in Charlotte, a member of the Sudan Shriners, New Bern, and a member of Richlands First Baptist Church. He also supported Floyd Pond Holiness Church in Richlands.
After graduation in 1947 from Rutherfordton High School James received his Associates Degree From Beaufort County Technical Institute in Police Science. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving in the Korean War.
In 1951 James joined the North Carolina Highway Patrol and was stationed in Mint Hill, Charlotte and stationed in Jacksonville from 1966 until his retirement June, 1983 serving a total of 33 years and was the owner of East Side Motor Co. for many years in Richlands.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Brenda Smith Taylor of the home; two daughters, Lisa Mitchell and her husband Gary, Juli Baker and her husband Cecil, all of Richlands; four grandsons, James, Martin, Bradley and Casey, all of Richlands; one great-grandson, Luke; two sisters, Lucille Gast of Rutherfordton and Pat Doar of Murrells Inlet, SC; his God daughter, Candi and her husband Peter of Stafford, VA; and six special girls Amie, Emily and Kayla of Richlands, Rachel of Jacksonville, Claudia and Genevieve of Stafford, VA.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Jones Funeral Home, Jacksonville.
Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Sunday, August 24, 2014 at First Baptist Church, Richlands with Pastor Gary McAbee, Pastor Mike Jarman, Pastor Fred Tapper and Sheriff Ed Brown officiating. Interment will follow at Baker Family Cemetery, 401 Barbee Road, Richlands.
