Joseph Alexander Croom, 32, of Swansboro, died on Monday, Aug. 13, 2012, at Onslow Memorial Hospital after battling a terminal brain disease since January.

A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 17 at Swansboro United Methodist Church with Dr. Rev. Ed Gunter and the Rev. Rachel Moser officiating. Graveside services will follow at Seaside Memorial Park.

Joseph was born in Morehead City, and was the son of Donald and Cleo Vinson Croom. He graduated with honors from Swansboro High School in 1998. He continued his education at Carteret Community College where he was President of the SGA and received three associate degrees. He went on to East Carolina University where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management with concentration in event planning. He was also a certified national wedding planner. He worked as the Admissions Officer at Carteret Community College. He was very involved in the North Carolina Association of Educational Office Personnel and the Eastern U.S. Division of CACRO.

He is survived by his parents, Donald and Cleo Vinson Croom of Swansboro; one sister, Caroline C. Henderson and her husband Jason of Smithfield, Va.; Aunt Lavonne "Aunt Bon" Bartol and her husband Frank of Virginia Beach, Va.; cousins, Dianne Scott and her husband Kent of Leesburg, Va., and Kyle Bartol and his wife Melissa and their children, William, Regan and Tanner, all of Alexandria, Va.; his paternal grandmother, Irene Croom, of Kinston; uncles, H.C. Croom and wife Judy of Kinston, Barry Croom and wife Debbie of Raleigh, and James Croom and wife Stephanie of Holland, Mich.; aunt, Becky Libby of Kinston; great-uncle, Redford Rhue of Cape Carteret; great-aunt, Esther White of Jacksonville; and many other close relatives and friends, and his four-legged companions Daisy Cher and Sweet Pea.

Flowers are welcomed or memorials may be made to Carteret Community College, 3505 Arendell St., Morehead City, N.C. 28557, in memory of Joseph.
