Obituary

Samuel Lee "Sammy" Hughes, Sr. died Feb. 17, 2013 at Carteret General Hospital.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Morehead City with Rev. Mike Freese and Rev. Joseph Franklin officiating.

The family will receive friends in the church atrium one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and later served in the National Guard during the Korean War. He worked for 37 years at the Naval Air Rework Facility at Cherry Point before becoming a licensed electrical contractor. He was a retired member of the Morehead City Fire Department, a founding member and past president of the Carteret Rifle and Pistol Club and a life member of Morehead-Beaufort Elks Lodge # 1710

Survivors include wife Mary of the home; daughter, Brenda Carol Thomas of Newport; son Sammy Jr. of Newport; two grandaughters; and sister, Rilla H. Gould of Morehead City.
