BEAR CREEK - Royal (Papa) Avery Cannon, Sr., 75, born Oct. 14, 1937, passed away April 19 at the Veterans Hospice Center in Durham.

He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Hila J. Cannon, sons Richard Miller Jr., and Royal Avery Cannon, Jr., grandson Michael Cannon, his parents Fred Thomas and Tiny B. Cannon, brothers Harry Lee Cannon and Jerry Thomas Cannon, and his sisters Doris Jeanette Jones, Annie Walston, and Virginia Dare Jones.

He is survived by his son William Thomas "Tommy" Cannon of Bear Creek, daughter Susan M. Padgett of Bear Creek, brothers Fred "Jack" Cannon of Hubert, Clifford Ray Cannon of Florida and Charles Allen Cannon of Hubert, sisters Judy Cannon Strain of Hubert, Daisy Elizabeth Wells of Swansboro, and Pachia Ruth Shedd of Florida, grandchildren Jeremy and Amy Turner, Chris and Jamison Padgett, Jamie and Bobby Winston, Nicholas and Alicia McCall, Abby Cannon, Bethany Cannon, Tory and Jessie Sipler, Monica and Ricardo Broderick, Amber Miller Fairless, Ashley and Tommy Edge, Emily Cannon, Crystal Stevenson, and Niles Turner, and his great grandchildren Haley, Zooey, Maya, Devante, Cianna, Taylor, Cannon, Tre, Lane, Destiny, Max and Dez.

A visitation for Roy will be held at Johnson Funeral Home of Jacksonville on Tuesday evening at 6 to 8 p.m. A graveside service for Roy will take place at Gethsemane Memorial Cemetery in Morehead City on Wednesday at 1 p.m.

He is greatly loved and will be missed beyond words. Friends and family are welcome to come by Roy's home at any time.
