Laurel Baker King passed away suddenly into the arms of the Lord on Aug. 5, 2013.

She was born in Roseboro, June 17, 1947, daughter of the late Ronimus Baker and Edith Jones Baker.

Laurel graduated from New Hanover High School in 1965, and in 1969, she graduated from Wilmington College (now UNCW), where she also served as president of Phi Mu Fraternity. Laurel worked for many years as a medical assistant in various medical facilities in Wilmington and Winston-Salem, was a Program Director for Healthy Horizons at Cape Fear Memorial Hospital in Wilmington, and was the Assistant Town Clerk for the Town of Topsail Beach from 2004-2009. She then began a well-deserved retirement from 'official' employment and was blessed to be able to devote herself to being a full-time Grammy and travel companion to her family. Over the years, her family was fortunate to have her along on various adventures from Niagara Falls, Canada, down to the Panama Canal, and from San Francisco to Great Britain. As children, Laurel's family attended Grace United Methodist Church in Wilmington where she was a part of the handbell choir, and she married Terry there on March 7, 1969. She was currently a member of the handbell choir at Emma Anderson Memorial Chapel in Topsail Beach, and in recent years volunteered at the Safe Haven Thrift Shoppe in Hampstead. Being a part-time Parrot Head, Laurel especially loved being at the ocean, seeing and learning about dolphins and sea turtles, and basically all things warm and tropical. She also loved watching every minute of the Masters golf tournaments and being Terry's occasional golf caddy.

Survivors include her husband of forty-four years, Terrance "Terry" F. King; daughter, Teresa King Marra and husband LTC John Derek Slavin (USAR) of Wilmington; two granddaughters, Madelynne Gabrielle Marra and Delaney Mary Slavin; two brothers, James W. Baker and wife Joan of Greensboro, and Marion S. Baker of Hamilton, Ohio, and his daughter, Ginny B. Johnson, and her husband Doug and family; and a sister, Lucy Baker Rowe and husband Gary and son, Kelly S. Rowe and fiancée, Jennifer; a sister-in-law, Barbara K. Faulkner and husband Charles of Conover, and their children, Jim Faulkner and Katie Faulkner. Also surviving are many extended family members and friends, and a very special life-long friend, Kathleen Bradley of Berkley, Calif.

A celebration of her life will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9, 2013, at Grace United Methodist Church, 401 Grace Street, Wilmington. Interment will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, 2013, at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel, 1617 Market Street, Wilmington.
