Mr. Luther Franklin "Junior" Anderson Jr., of Jefferson, died Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014, at the Margate Health and Rehab Center in Jefferson. He was 84.
Mr. Anderson was born July 19, 1929, in Creston to Luther Franklin and Jenny Johnson Anderson.
Mr. Anderson was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Jimmy Lee Anderson.
He graduated from Riverview High School and entered the U.S. Navy as a Seabee during the Korean War. He attended Clevinger College graduating with a degree in business administration. Mr. Anderson then went to work for the State of North Carolina. He was employed by the N.C. Prison Department as a Sergeant of Guards. Later he transferred to the highway department.
In 1965 he went to work for the N.C. Forest Service. Mr. Anderson was instrumental in starting the Christmas Tree Industry in Ashe County and was one of the first tree growers. He retired in 1989 after 31 years of dedicated service with the Forest Service. After retirement, he remained active in the Christmas Tree Industry.
He also served for 22 years on the Board of Aldermen for the Town of Jefferson and served on the N.C. Forest Advisory Council from 1993-2013. He was a member of Mount Jefferson Baptist Church.
Mr. Anderson is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ina Ruth Campbell Anderson; son, John Norman Anderson of Portland, Ore.; two sisters, Mary Nell Simmons of West Jefferson, and Virginia Ruth Robinson of Brandywine, Md.; grandson, Jakob Anderson; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27, 2014, at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel by Pastor Keith Casey, Rev. Steve Goss and Rev. John Duvall. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens with Military Rites. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2014, at Badger Funeral Home.
