Robert Farkas Obituary

Robert L. Farkas Robert L. "Lee" Farkas, passed away Tuesday, March 25, 2014, at Joliet Area Community Hospice Home. Age 84 years. Bob is survived by his wife of 36 1/2 years, Laurie Holmquist Farkas; his sisters-in-law, Gloria Farkas and Delores Farkas; his mother-in-law, Phyllis Holmquist; his brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Cindy Holmquist. Survived by many nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews and cousins. And also his kitty companions, Clarybelle, Sadybelle and Zoey. Preceded in death by his parents; sister and brother-in-law, Majorie (Farkas) and Stephan Palko. Two brothers, John and George Farkas. Father-in-law, Howard D. Holmquist; and two nephews, Robert Palko and Russell Farkas. Born in Joliet, August 6, 1929, to John and Anna (Cipala) Farkas. Bob was raised and educated in Joliet, member of JTHS Class of 1947. While in school, he began his association with Oestreich Top Service Company, retiring in 1994 as president and part-owner of Oestreich Sales and Service, Inc. Bob was a proud Korean War veteran, having served as SFC in the 955th Field Artillery Battalion of the U. S. Army. He was a member of the V. F.W. Stone City Post #2199 where he had also enjoyed bowling for many years. Bob always had an interest in and supported Laurie's work in the schools. For over ten years, Bob served as Balloon Chairman for the Will County Council for Exceptional Children's Olympics and in 1986, he was recognized by the state organization with the Meritous Service Award. Bob continued volunteering and assisting with school related events and programs. Upon his retirement from Oestreichs, Bob returned to an earlier job, driving a truck; this time for Coldwater Seed Farm where he was so at-home in his phenomenal garden. Throughout school, church and the neighborhood Bob was known for his gardening and cooking talents and the joy of sharing these and himself with others. Funeral services will be held at the Carlson Holmquist Sayles Funeral Home, 2320 Black Road, Monday, March 31, 2014 at 10:00 A.M. with Rev. Tim Linstrom, Pastor of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and Rev.
