Gayle Anderson(1926 - 2014)

Gayle E. Anderson, 88, of Sedgwick, CO, passed away Saturday, August 2, 2014 in Sterling, CO. Funeral services were held at 10:30am, Wednesday, August 6th, at the Sedgwick Presbyterian Church with Pastor Art Roth officiating. Burial followed at the Sedgwick Cemetery. Gayle Edward Anderson was born February 21, 1926. Gayle and his twin brother were born in Yuma, Colorado to Albert and Ruth Anderson. Gayle grew up in the Fairfield Community on a farm south of Sedgwick. He attended school there thru 10th grade, then attended Holyoke High School his junior year and went to Sedgwick High School his senior year and graduated there. In December 1944, Gayle was drafted into the Army during WW II. He was on the first ship to land on Japan after the bombing of Hiroshima. He was honorably discharged December 1946. Upon returning from the war he moved to Holdredge, NE he worked in a dairy. A year later he moved to Sedgwick to work for local farmers as a hired man. On a bet with his buddy at the Fireman's Ball, he gave his future wife a ride home. Gayle and Wilma Richardson were married December 5, 1948. Two weeks after they returned from their honeymoon, the blizzard of 1949 hit. Gayle began farming for himself in 1951. Thus fulfilling his dream of owning his own farm. They lived on the family farm until May 2013. Gayle enjoyed family, dancing, farming, raising cattle, playing cards, the Bronco's and Rockies. Gayle and Wilma belonged to the "Hicks and Chicks" square dance club, traveling around the area to attend many dances. Gayle was a member of the Sedgwick Presbyterian Church, having served as an Elder. He was a volunteer fireman, Elk, Sedgwick County Sheriff's Posse and past president of the local Farmers Union. Gayle enjoyed displaying his wheat, corn and millet at the Sedgwick Fall Festival each year, often winning 1st Prize. Gayle and Wilma celebrated their 65th Wedding Anniversary December 5,2013 with several family members. Gayle is survived by his wife, Wilma, son Larry of Aurora, CO, daughter Linda and husband Ken Allmer of Layton, UT, son Richard Anderson of Julesburg, and daughter April and husband Bob Squier of Sterling, CO. He has 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He is survived by his sister, Sylvia Bogenhagen, twin brother, Vayle Anderson and his brother Darryl Anderson. He is preceded in death by his parents, Albert Anderson and Ruth Anderson Peterson and sister Della Anderson Hink.
