Master Chief Hugh "Hughie" O'Neal Jr., U.S. Navy, Ret, born on Feb. 14, 1941, in Sterling, to Hugh Sr and Wilma Wisdom O'Neal, passed away on Nov. 9, 2013 in Gulfport. A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, at the Riemann Family Funeral Home, 11280 Three Rivers Rd, Gulfport, Miss. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, at the funeral home chapel. Burial with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 15, at Biloxi National Cemetery.
Hugh graduated from Sterling High School and worked in the oil fields until enlisting in the Navy in June 1962. He was aboard the USS Frontier as a storekeeper.
He married Barbara Mari in Sterling on Feb. 16, 1963, at St. Anthony Catholic Church. He left the Navy in 1965, moved back to Sterling, where he worked until reenlisting in the Navy Seabees. He retired after 32 years of service to our country as a Master Chief Equipment Operator. He loved hunting, fishing, gardening and traveling.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara O'Neal of McHenry, Miss.; and his son, Ty O'Neal and wife Leona and his granddaughter, Laura, of Perkinston, Miss.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh Sr. and Wilma O'Neal; and a brother-in-law, Floyd Acre.
