Joe Skinner(1931 - 2013)

Joe Skinner, 81, of Sterling, passed away Saturday, May 11, 2013, in Sterling. In memory of the life he lived, the family will be receiving guests at Tennant Funeral Home Reception Room Saturday, May 18 from 2 to 4 p.m.

Joe was born on Aug. 8, 1931, in Appleton, Wis., to Albert R. and Olive Mae (Moore) Skinner. He attended Campbell Elementary, Sterling Junior High, Sterling High School and Northeastern Junior College.

He played two years of minor league baseball in the Pittsburg Pirates system, was in the U.S. Army for two years, and was an electrical engineer for Public Service Co. of Colorado, retiring after 38 years.

He married his high school sweetheart, Dortha Janis Main, on Aug. 23, 1952, in El Paso, Texas. They were married for 60 years. They were blessed with the births of two wonderful sons and two much loved grandchildren.

His baseball career was cut short after an injury while serving in the U.S. Army in Japan. He was a member of the American Legion and enjoyed golfing, bicycling, sports, and loved yard work. His sons and grandchildren were his top priority in life.

He is survived by wife, Dortha Skinner; sons, Scott and Sandra Skinner of Arvada and Troy Skinner and partner James Jensen of Palm Springs, Calif.; grandson, Bradley Skinner of Lubbock, Texas; and granddaughter, Kelsey Skinner of Fort Collins; sister, Geraldine Brown of Phoenix.

He was preceded in death by son, Mark J. Skinner; parents, Albert and Olive Mae Skinner; sister, Maxine Weldele; brothers, Harold, Clifford, Ronald and Boyd.

The family suggests in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or charity of your choice in care of Tennant Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1547, Sterling, CO 80751.
