Mary Mares of Colorado Springs, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 19, 2013, at the age of 77 at Mount St. Francis Nursing Center. Services will be held at Divine Redeemer Catholic Church located at 927 N. Logan Avenue, Colorado Springs, CO 80909 on Friday, Sept. 27, with a viewing at 10 a.m., rosary at 10:30 a.m., and Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery located at 1005 Hancock Expressway, Colorado Springs, CO 80903.
Mary was born Aug. 27, 1936, on a farm three miles north of Sterling to northern Italian immigrants Tiberio and Angela (Vidale) Rizzolo. She attended Springdale Valley School and graduated in 1954 from Sterling High School.
Mary married Floyd Mares on Nov. 15, 1958 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Sterling. They had three children: Joseph, Jolene and Michael. While residing in Sterling, Mary was employed by British-American Petroleum and Security State Bank.
The family relocated to Colorado Springs in November 1964. Mary worked as a secretary for School District 11 for 21 years and retired in 1991. She enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening, and fishing.
She is survived by her children Jolene Mares Barry and Michael Mares, granddaughter Maria Therese Barry, and sisters Elda Lousberg, Dorothy Hyde, and Esther Eno.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Tiberio and Angela Rizzolo; her husband, Floyd Mares; child, Joseph Mares; sister, Celestina O'Brien; and brothers, Francesco Rizzolo and Louis Rizzolo.
