ValDean Clayton Mahaffey

ValDean Clayton Mahaffey, 74 of Sterling, passed away Thurs., June 19, 2014 in Sterling. Memorial service to be held 10:30 a.m. Tues., June 24, at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home, with services concluding at the funeral home. Clayton was born Oct. 29, 1939 in Republic County, Kansas to Lavern and Daisy Smith Mahaffey. He came to Colorado when he was 15 years old. He worked at Climax, CO, later moved to Montana and worked as a logger. He moved back to Sterling when he was 18 years old and worked for Gibbs Standard Station. Clayton married Joan Mansuetti on April 5, 1959. They moved to Sidney, NE where he worked for Sears Appliance Service. Moved back to Sterling in 1974, worked for Foxhoven, Marlin, and NJC for fifteen years, retiring due to health. He loved fishing, baseball, football and working with his hands and reading about history. His family was the most important thing in his life. Clayton is survived by his wife Joan Mahaffey of Sterling; daughters Sue Whited and husband Gene, Kathy Mahaffey and Sharon of Evanston, WY and Barb Mahaffey and Troy of Satellite Beach, FL; sons Pat Mahaffey and wife Amy and James Mahaffey, all of Sterling, son Louis Mahaffey and wife Gaby of Platteville; brothers Carl Mahaffey of Sterling and Lyle Mahaffey of Coldwater, MO; stepdaughter Linda Whited of Sidney, NE; grandchildren Jerry Whited, Sarah Whitman, Greg and Shane Mahaffey, Skyler, Alex, Akayla Mahaffey; great grandsons Tristan, Pacen, Camden Whited, Bradley and Evan Whitman. Preceded in death by his parents and his sister Barb Carlsen and husband Dann. Contributions may be made to Clayton Mahaffey Memorial.
