Margaret Helen Hettinger, 92, of Scottsdale, Ariz., formerly of Merino, passed away Jan. 19, 2013, at her home in Scottsdale. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at Tennant Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, at Peace Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Wendy Kalan officiating. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery. |
Margaret was born April 17, 1920, in Trinidad to Carl A. and Margaret (Hawley) Richardson. She graduated in 1937 from Laramie High School, Laramie, Wyo., and in 1942 from the University of Wyoming with a bachelor's degree in French.
She taught school in Torrington, Wyo., in 1942. In 1943, she was employed by the University of Wyoming in the Dean of Education's office and in charge of the summer school and the Teachers' Placement Bureau. In 1945, she taught in Laramie High School, then in 1946 taught in Atwood High School. After that year, Atwood High closed and she went to teach at Sterling High School and Sterling Junior College, where she was the Dean of Women. In 1967, she began teaching at Merino Jr./Sr. High School, retiring in 1988. She continued to substitute for many years.
On May 26, 1946, she married Bill Hettinger in Laramie, Wyo. Bill passed away in February 1979.
Margaret was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, Eastern Star, Delta Kappa Gamma, American Association of University Women and the Merino Education Association. She enjoyed reading, crocheting and playing the piano. She traveled to all 50 states, Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean and Europe. Margaret especially enjoyed spending time with her friends, family and attending her grandchildren's events.
Margaret had a passion for teaching. Every student she taught held a special place in her heart.
She is survived by her son, Gary Hettinger and wife Joan of Grand Junction; daughter, Carla Hansell and husband Dave of Scottsdale, Ariz.; grandchildren, Ryan Hettinger and wife Meaghan of Canonsburg, Pa., Brooke Peterson and husband Shawn of Johnstown, Carli and Hannah Hansell of Scottsdale, Ariz.; great-grandchildren, Lauren Hettinger of Canonsburg, Pa., Jackson and Hadleigh Peterson of Johnstown; numerous nieces, nephews and special friends.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Margaret Richardson; spouse, Bill Hettinger; son, Jim Hettinger; brothers and sisters-in-law, George Hettinger and wife Helen, Alex Hettinger and wife Helen, Theresa Persse and husband Frank, Lydia Endicott, Amelia Sandow and Herman Hettinger.
