Merlin Duane Berg Obituary

Merlin Duane Berg, 86, of Sterling, died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, at North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley. Memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 7, at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home, with Deacon Ronald Michieli officiating. Services will conclude at the funeral home, with inurnment to follow at a later date.

He was born Jan. 31, 1927, in Arriba, to Edwin Benjamin Berg and Esther Lillian Berg (Reinemer) and grew up in Merino, where he graduated from high school in 1944. Later that year, he enlisted in the Navy serving in the Pacific theater aboard U.S.S. Louisville.

Upon returning from the Navy he attended Colorado A&M (CSU) and Sterling Junior College (NJC). After graduating from SJC he taught seventh and eighth grades in Dailey and coached athletics. While teaching he attended summer school at Colorado State College of Education in Greeley (UNC), obtaining a B.A. degree in 1952.

Merlin married Dorothy M. Stone in Sidney, Neb., on Nov. 9, 1947, with whom he shared nearly 66 years. They had two sons, Michael and Ronald, making their home in Sterling for more than 61 years.

He began his business career working at Marsau's Auto Parts, and later Sterling Community Federal Credit Union, before becoming an agent for Farmer's Insurance Group for the next 39 years. During that time, Merlin built several houses in Sterling with his father and brothers, Wilbur and Leroy.

Among his favorite past-times were golf, model-railroading, hunting and wood-working.

Merlin is survived by his wife, Dorothy Berg of Sterling; brother, Leroy Berg of Sterling; son, Michael Berg and wife Barbara Berg of Littleton; son, Ronald Berg and wife Soile Berg of Colorado Springs; grandson, Joshua Berg and wife Nancy of Colorado Springs; granddaughter, Jennifer Vandermeer and husband Trevor of Mansfield, Mass.; granddaughter, Courtney Skiles and husband Landon of Colorado Springs; granddaughter, Amanda Berg; four great-grandchildren, Madelynn and Josiah Berg, Ruby and Lyla Skiles, all of Colorado Springs; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Esther Berg; and brother, Wilbur Berg.
