Kathy Valdez Obituary

Kathy Lou Valdez was born Sept. 24, 1944, in Sterling, and passed on to be with the Lord on July 24, 2013. There will be a Memorial Service at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 300 Ballpark Rd. in Sterling.

Kathy was very involved in the Sterling community for many years, and was always focused on helping others in need, no matter the circumstance. She volunteered regularly at her church, assisting with anything that required attention, and pursuing God's work was a major component of her life.

Kathy founded the Red Raspberry Tarts (a Red Hat Society charter), was an active member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority for over 40 years where she was awarded Woman of the Year several times, and was the owner of Kathy's Picket Fence, a small local business she started. On a professional level Kathy taught and was a part of the RE-1 Valley School District for over 30 years, assisted with the Summer Migrant Education & Care program, and was driven to champion the cause of individuals with special needs throughout the state of Colorado. She was active in Special Olympics of Colorado and also volunteered as a coach for many events, including the Special Olympics World Games.

Kathy devoted her life to her family, and to those with special needs everywhere, striving tirelessly and selflessly to educate and care for absolutely every individual she could that needed help, and to provide them the tools necessary to achieve a better quality of life.

She is survived by her husband John, daughter Joell and husband Darren, daughter Lori Sanders, and grandchildren Fisher and Macy Bourn.

Donations can be made in Kathy's name to Special Olympics of Colorado or the Northeast Colorado Cancer Resource Association.

Chaney-Reager Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
