Orpha Inez (Barkey) Peterson Obituary

Orpha Inez Barkey Peterson passed away Dec. 1, 2013. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3, at Gerk Funeral Home in Haxtun. Funeral Service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4, at The Church of The Brethren with Pastor Ken Frantz officiating. Interment will follow at Haxtun Cemetery following the service.

Orpha was born Sept. 1, 1915, in Cortland, Neb., to Frank C. and Belle Stanley Barkey. She attended schools at Highland Center, Haxtun High School, Kearney State College, and completed her college degree in Greeley.

Orpha taught school at Black Hawk, Highland Center, Hudson and Grover before joining the WAC in 1943.

She married Ralph Peterson in 1946 at the home of her parents. They farmed together, retiring in 1979 and enjoying winters in Texas and Arizona.

Survivors include sons, Robert Peterson and wife Betty of Surprise, Ariz., Lynn Peterson and wife Lynn of Denver; daughter, Adele McConnell and husband Larry of Haxtun; sister, Marian Christiansen; eight grandchildren, Kristie and Lars Hammar of Tuscon, Ariz., Karen and Darrin Lewandowski of Parker, Lisa Peterson of Milford, Pa,, Shanda and Jeremy Vandenbark of Mesa, Ariz., Darci and Matt Meyer of Juniata, Neb., Kyle and Brandi McConnell of Haxtun, Brian Peterson of Denver and Tara Peterson of Milwaukee, Wis.; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ralph Peterson; infant son, Howard; brothers, Cline Barkey and Daniel Barkey.
