Robert "Bob" Schott, 77, passed away Dec. 25, 2013, in Sterling. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 27, at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 28, at First Christian Church, with the Rev. Victor Karg and the Rev. Lew Champ officiating. Services will conclude at the church.

As our family gathers together to celebrate Papa's life, it seems that "family" is precisely how to convey the life and legacy of Mr. Robert Leon Schott. For even though he has passed on, Papa's kindness, gentleness, humor and love is manifested in his wife Judy, their five children, and their 14 grandchildren, as well as the many other family members and friends who knew him.

Papa left his earthly body Christmas day after a nearly five-month long endurance against pancreatic cancer.

Bob was born to Robert and Amelia Schott on Aug. 4, 1936, in Sterling. He attended grade school in both Atwood and Crook and graduated from Sterling High School in 1954. He spent one year at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, and he graduated from the University of Northern Colorado in 1962 where he had played basketball.

Bob married Judith Lee Smith on Sept. 7, 1958, in Merino. They made their home in Merino where they raised their family. Bob and Judy celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2008 and later that year moved from Merino into Sterling.

Bob was a man of the land. He engaged in farming for 30 years after which he went to work as manager for the Lower South Platte Water Conservancy District from June 1991 to March 2003.

Bob is survived by his wife, Judy Schott; his brother, Gordon Schott and wife Ann of Denver; his daughter, Lori Gill and husband Tom and family of Merino, and his sons, Bradley Schott and wife Kelly and family of Lexington, Neb., Jeffery Schott and wife Suzy and family of Eaton, Avery Schott and wife Lori and family of Milaca, Minn., and Tyler Schott and wife Rita and Emmett of Colorado Springs.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Amelia Schott, Leroy and Zada Smith; his brother, Edmund Schott; and his sisters, Betty Karg, Shirley Miller and Carol Sinkey.

Papa was a man of faith whose aim was to treat people fairly. He embraced others in their struggles and grief and was often called a "gentle giant."

The Schott family is thankful that Papa passed peacefully. We miss him greatly this holiday season, but we are so grateful that we will always be surrounded by one another to endure the void of his absence. We are knit together by a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend.
