August "'Gus'" Schneider Obituary

August "Gus" Schneider, 95, of Greeley, was born Nov. 10, 1917, and passed away on Sept. 20, 2013. A funeral service to celebrate Gus' life will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2013, at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 3000 35th Ave. in Greeley. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of service on Tuesday at the church. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the Riverside Cemetery in Sterling.

Gus was born in Brush to Carl and Katherine (Dummler) Schneider, who were Germans from Russia and came to the United States in 1912 from Grimm, Russia. As a young lad his family moved to Sterling, where he attended Trinity Lutheran School. His family farmed and Gus grew up working in the beet fields and doing other farm work.

He entered the military in January of 1942. After basic he went to Machinist School in Springfield, Mass., and then went overseas to the European theater. He was discharged in October 1945.

On May 26, 1946, he married G. Jewel Sanders in Sterling.

Gus worked for Great Western Sugar Company as a master mechanic at factories in Sterling, Lovell, Wyo., Mitchell, Neb., Billings, Mont., Findlay, Ohio, Brighton and Longmont. He and his wife moved to Arvada, where he was a senior buyer for Great Western in the Denver office before he retired in 1980.

He took up wood working and made beautiful pieces of oak furniture for all of his family as well as rocking horses, cedar chests, toys, etc., for his grandchildren.

In 1985 they moved to Greeley. In 2011 he moved to Fair Acres Manor until his death.

He and his wife enjoyed several trips to Europe as well as traveling by motor home to most of the U.S. and Canada. They also spent many winters in Arizona. He enjoyed playing golf and baseball and was a Broncos and Rockies Fan. He loved camping and hiking in the mountains and going to polka dances.

Gus was a life member of VFW Post 01771, Lafayette, and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife, Jewel of 67 years who lives in Greeley; son, Daniel Schneider and wife Diane of Breckenridge; daughter, Nancy Sollee of Colorado Springs; daughter, Cynthia Gulisano and husband Richard of Torrington, Wyo.; grandsons, Daniel Sollee Jr. and wife Meagan, Chad Conrad and wife Christy, Jeff Conrad and wife Savannah; granddaughters, Tina Adams and husband Tom, Kelli Shannon and husband Brad and Erika Lyon and husband Nick. He also has seven great-grandchildren: Ashton and Quinn Sollee, Alex Conrad, Brayden and Ethan Conrad, Breck Shannon and Drake Lyon; one brother, Elmer Schneider and wfie Ginger; two sisters, Florence Weber and husband LaVern and Frieda Grunczewski; sister-in-law, Jen DeSoto; and brother-in-law, Wendell Sanders. He has many nieces and nephews as well.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers; one sister; one brother-in-law; and one grandson.
