Janet Gwozdz Obituary

Janet C. "Nettie" Gwozdz, 86, of Manchester, formerly of East Hartford, beloved wife of the late Edward Gwozdz, passed peacefully into eternal rest on Friday, Feb. 22, 2013, surrounded by her loving family.

Born on the same day as the Queen of England, April 26, 1926, she was royalty within her own family. An amazing mother and grandmother, she is survived by Judy, Mary, Jane; grandson, Brian; and her truly beloved dog, Rosie. She leaves many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends who were privileged to be a part of her long and happy life.

Her family will forever remember her unselfish love, care, and devotion to them. Her whole life was a classic love story. At a time in her childhood in Scotland, her family was separated and sent to live in the country during World War II, which probably affected how close they were afterwards. Her parents were William and Mary Guild. She was predeceased by sisters, Marion Munro, Violet Levangie, her twin, Ina Puziak, and brother, Jimmy Guild. She is survived by her sister, Mary Rajpold; brothers, Alex and William Guild.

Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Janet, also known as "Nettie," met her beloved husband, Eddie, at the end of the war while he was stationed in Scotland. They were married at St. Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh. She was among the first war brides in East Hartford, where they bought their home on Forbes Street and spent 60 wonderful married years together. They sponsored and brought to this country much of her family, including her parents, two brothers, and three sisters. Talented and intelligent, she went from temporary to management at Shell Oil Co. Upon her retirement, Nettie enjoyed working as a home health aide. Nettie was caring, compassionate, and loving, enthusiastically enjoying every simple pleasure, like the feeling of sun on her face and cuddling her dog. She enjoyed being among family, friends, neighbors, and her pets. She loved talking to people, walks, taking car rides, and all outdoor life, especially swimming. She and Eddie provided so many special memories of gatherings and holiday celebrations at Forbes Street, camping at Hammonasset and Sun Valley. Nettie always loved her music. In later years, it was a major source of comfort as she listened and sang her songs with family and friends. Of strong faith, the last song she sang on her last day on earth was "Jesus Loves Me." Despite all the losses and health decline she endured, she never lost her contagious optimism, sense of humor, and her love of life. Even her dog's name sounded like her outlook on life, Rosie. Nettie's most used word was "good," with never a bad word about anybody and an instant connection with everyone privileged to know her. Her smile and laugh were instant rewards to all. Janet "Nettie" has been a longtime member of the Ellen Douglas Lodge No. 8, Daughters of Scotia, honoring her Scottish heritage.

Special thanks to her guardian angels, the staff at Manchester Manor, the residents and their loving family members who became her extended family. Thank you also at this difficult time to Lucette S. Guild, Bob Pratt, Edsel McCarthy, Theresa Sirois, Ed and Winnie Delong Zinky, and Michael Puziak.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the Humane Society, 701 Russell Road, Newington, CT 06111.

Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. from the John F. Tierney Funeral Home, 219 W. Center St., Manchester, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at the Church of the Assumption, Manchester, with burial in Silver Lane Cemetery, East Hartford.

Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
