Alpa Mary Fava Volkert, 91, of Manchester, the wife of the late Roy L. Volkert, died Saturday, March 15, 2014, at her home.
Born in Manchester, she was the daughter of the late Federico and Margherita (Massoni) Volkert and was a lifelong resident. Alpa was a beautician in her earlier years and worked as a school crossing guard for the town of Manchester. But the most important part of her life was raising her family and making a home for them. She was also an avid swimmer and gardener, who loved working on her flower beds.
She is survived by her children, Pamela Orlowski and husband, Robert, of Bolton, Dennis Volkert and wife, Nancy, of Manchester, and Carla Volkert and husband, Philip Nadeau, of Webster, Mass.; her grandchildren Gena Orlowski, Keith Volkert, and Matthew Volkert; her great-grandchildren Emma Volkert and Max Volkert; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband she was predeceased by her brother Mario Fava; and sister Emma (Fava) Songailo.
Alpa's family wishes to express deep appreciation to the Harmony Home Care caregivers, especially Phyllis and Johana, and the VNA Hospice nurses and health aids for their loving care and support.
A memorial gathering will be held on Saturday, March 22, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the John F. Tierney Funeral Home, 219 W. Center St., Manchester.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice program for the VNA, 8 Keynote Drive, Vernon, CT 06066.
