Laura "June" (Cantwell) Nordell Kunkel, 88, of Somers, beloved wife of the late Alton Kunkel, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 17, 2014, at St. Francis Hospital.
Born in Hartford, the daughter of the late Walton and Helen (Ferris) Cantwell, she grew up and lived in Hartford, East Windsor, Newington, and Vernon before moving to Somers three years ago. Prior to her retirement in 1981, June was employed at the Aetna Insurance Company in Hartford for 25 years. She was a life member of the Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 254, Hartford. She enjoyed knitting, traveling, and spending time with her family and friends.
She is survived by her loving children, Donald Nordell and his wife, Joan, of East Windsor; Marilyn Thibodeau and her husband, Tim, of Stafford Springs; and Alan Nordell and his wife, Mary-Beth Kaeser, of Ashford; six grandchildren, Charles, Debbie, Michael, Lynn, Tracy and Steven; nine great-grandchildren; her sister, Donna Mitchell of Calais, Maine; and many nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by four brothers, Walton, Donald, Allan and Richard Cantwell.
Her family will receive friends for calling hours from 3 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 21, 2014, at the Ladd-Turkington & Carmon Funeral Home, 551 Talcottville Road (Route 83), Vernon, followed by a funeral service at the funeral home beginning at 7:30 p.m.
Family and friends may gather at the funeral home from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 22, to form a funeral cortège to go in procession to Grove Hill Cemetery, Rockville.
Memorial donations in June's memory may be made to the Somers Fire Department, EMS Division, 400 Main St., Somers, CT 06071.
