Arlene (Heywood) Howes

Arlene (Heywood) Howes, 77, of Longmeadow, Mass., wife of the late Maurice Howes, died peacefully on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013, at her home.

She was born on May 11, 1935, in St. Paul, Minn., daughter to the late George and Margaret (Schintz) Heywood. Arlene grew up in St. Cloud, Minn., and was a graduate and valedictorian of her class at St. Cloud Technical High School in 1952. She went on to attend Macalester College and the University of Minnesota simultaneously, graduating from the University of Minnesota with the class of 1956. Arlene was a resident of Longmeadow and Enfield for many years, and recently resided in East Longmeadow. She had a passion for music, serving as the organist and choir director for Calvary Presbyterian Church in Enfield for 38 years, and also directed the Second Baptist Church handbell choir in Suffield. Arlene performed with the Springfield Symphony Chorus for over 40 years and with the St. Michael's Players of East Longmeadow. She was a longtime member and former treasurer of the Springfield Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. She enjoyed traveling around the U.S. and Europe. A kind, caring, and loving mother, grandmother, and friend, she will be greatly missed.

She leaves her daughters, Kristin M. Kavanagh and her husband, Nathan Johnson, of Austin, Texas, Karin K. O'Keefe and her husband, Brian, of Longmeadow, and Kathryn L. Kavanagh of Austin, Texas; three grandchildren, Jillian, Alec, and Aidan O'Keefe; and four stepchildren, Seann Xenja of Mill Valley, Calif., Holly Howes of Canaan, N.H., Beth Simpkins of Errol, N.H. and Jennifer Eagan of Farmington. She was predeceased by her stepson, Jonathan Howes.

Her family will receive friends on Sunday, March 3, 2013, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Nicholson & Carmon Funeral Home, 443 East St. (Route 159), Suffield.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, March 4, 2013, at 11 a.m., at the Calvary Presbyterian Church, 1518 King St., Enfield, with burial to follow in Longmeadow Cemetery.
