Barbara (Sisson) Gilson, 66, of Vernon, loving wife of 43 years to William J. Gilson Jr., passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2012, at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center.
Born in Boston, the daughter of the late James T. and Coniston (Lees) Sisson, she grew up and lived in Braintree, Mass., before moving to Connecticut in 1969 and to Vernon in 1973. Barbara was a graduate of Braintree High School, class of 1964, and Perry Normal School (Boston), class of 1967.
Prior to her retirement in 2011, Barbara was a preschool special education paraprofessional for 26 years for the Vernon public schools. Throughout her life, Barbara was actively involved in numerous school and community efforts. In 1989, Barbara received a Vernon public schools' "Profiles in Professionalism" Award. In 1990, she received the Vernon Junior Women's Club Community Service Award for her efforts as the founder of Rockville High School's substance free graduation celebrations. She loved children and was very devoted to her children and grandchildren.
She was a member of the Captain Noah Grant Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and was a proud Mayflower descendant.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, David Gilson and his wife, Susan, of Ellington and Michael Gilson and his wife, Lisa, of Old Saybrook; six grandchildren, Alyssa, Kevin, Patrick, Aidan, Calla, and Sawyer; two brothers, Alan Sisson of Falmouth, Mass., and Dana Sisson and his wife, Donna, of Aurora, Ill.; a sister, Eleanor Olson and her husband, Carl, of Braintree, Mass.; her stepmother, Marion F. Sisson of Braintree, Mass.; and several loving extended family members. She was predeceased by her son, Daniel Gilson (1999).
Her family will receive friends for calling hours on Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Ladd-Turkington & Carmon Funeral Home, 551 Talcottville Road (Route 83), Vernon.
A funeral service will be celebrated on Monday, Dec. 31, 2012, at 10 a.m. at the Ellington Congregational Church, 72 Main St., Ellington. Burial will follow in Ellington Center Cemetery.
