Cecile Caron Bessette, a longtime resident of Manchester, died at age 97 on Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, 2012, at Middlesex Hospital in Middletown.
She was born in Val Brillant, Quebec, on Oct. 22, 1915, to Louis and Rosanna (Levasseur) Caron, the seventh of 14 children. Her husband, Emery J. Bessette, predeceased her in 1994.
She leaves four daughters, Diane and Eugene DeJoannis, Lorraine and Robert Sturwold, Jeanne Bessette, and Denise and Michael Shannahan; also 14 grandchildren, Jeffrey, Erica, Jason (and Sabrina), Alexa DeJoannis, Benjamin and Justin Sturwold, Emmett Bishop, Galen Bessette, Adam, Michelle (and Paul) Scheffler, Brenna, Rhiannon, Mariah, Margaux; also two great-grandchildren, William Sturwold, Sasuke Ledezma.
Cecile met her husband, Emery, at a friend's party in Fall River, Mass. They were married on June 22, 1940, in Plainfield, and lived in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Plainfield, before moving to Manchester in 1952. Recently, she had been living in Clinton with daughter, Lorraine. After a brief illness she was lovingly cared for at Middlesex Hospital in the palliative care/hospice area.
Cecile worked at Ka Klar, W.T. Grant, and Robertson School cafeteria. An active member of St. Bridget Church for over 50 years, she was devoted to her family, and enjoyed cooking, reading, sewing, crafts, and playing cards and games. Most recently she was a whiz at word finds. We will miss her sweet smile and caring nature.
Calling hours are at the Holmes Funeral Home, 400 Main St., Manchester, on Saturday, Dec. 29, from 10 a.m. to noon. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at St. Bridget Church, 80 Main St., at 12:30 p.m. following the wake. Burial in St. Bridget Cemetery will be private.
