Charles C. Chaponis, 87, of South Windsor and formerly of Manchester, beloved husband of the late Marion (McFarland) Chaponis, died peacefully Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014, at Manchester Memorial Hospital.
Charles was born Nov. 17, 1926, in Manchester, son of the late Charles and Anna (Weidner) Chaponis. He attended local schools and has been a resident of South Windsor for over 60 years. He was a U.S. Navy
veteran serving during World War II
and had worked as an electrician for Pratt & Whitney Aircraft for more than 30 years and together with his brother ran the Chaponis Bros. Strawberry Farm in South Windsor for many years. Mr. Chaponis was a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Manchester. He was an avid car enthusiast and particularly proud of his 1948 Crosley, which he restored with his son. He was a 25-year member of the South Windsor Square Dance Club and enjoyed hunting and fishing and all outdoor activities.
He is survived by his son and his wife, Charles J. and Ellen (Haines) Chaponis of Manchester; three grandchildren, Charles P. Chaponis, and his wife, Beth, of Poway, Calif., Heather Maslak, and her husband, Tom, of Bristol, Allison R. Chaponis of Manchester; two great-grandsons, Charles Kevin Chaponis and Connor Chaponis; and several nieces and nephews. Charles was predeceased by his brother, Sylvester Chaponis; and two sisters, Ann Kildish and Anastasia Strimike.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014, at 11 a.m. at the Holmes Funeral Home, 400 Main St., Manchester. Burial with military honors will be in the East Cemetery.
Calling hours will be held today, Feb. 17, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
