Daniel E. O'Connell of Manchester passed away peacefully on Nov. 16, 2012, at Manchester Manor after a 20-year battle with Parkinson's disease. He was the loving husband of 42 years to Mary (Walsh) O'Connell, the daughter of the late Honorable Maurice and Loretta Walsh Jr.
Dan was born in Jersey City, N.J., on Nov. 7, 1940. He was the oldest of twelve children born to the late Joseph and Claire (Donohue) O'Connell. He earned his Bachelor's Degree in business from St. Peter's College in New Jersey, where he served as a member of the Alumni Association. Prior to his retirement, Dan worked as a Claims Manager for the Traveler's Insurance Co. for over 35 years. He served as a Eucharistic Minister in three area churches; St. James, St. Bartholomew, and Assumption. He was also a former member of the Irish-American Club in Glastonbury.
In addition to his wife he is survived by his son, Daniel E. O'Connell Jr. of Vernon, four daughters and their spouses, Kelly and David Taylor of South Windsor, Mary and Darren White of Vernon, Peggy and Paul Jendrzejczyk of Glastonbury, and Shannon O'Connell of San Francisco, Calif. He also leaves behind four loving grandchildren, Janelle Prince, Colleen White, and Rebecca and Zach Taylor. He was predeceased by his brother Barry and sister Joanne Kennedy. He leaves behind his three brothers and six sisters, Ellen, Rev. Mark O'Connell, Claire (Hugh) Roarty, Eugene (Kathy) O'Connell, Mary Beth (Jack) Caulfield, Dr. Denis (Gabriella) O'Connell, Jane (Jay) O'Brien, Margaret (Jeff) Nielson, and Kathleen (Jim) Mahoney. He is also survived by his wife's family of eleven brothers and sisters and spouses, as well as 22 nieces and 24 nephews.
Relatives and friends may offer their condolences during calling hours on Monday, Nov. 19, 2012, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Watkins Funeral Home, 142 East Center St., Manchester.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Watkins Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at noon in St. James Church, 896 Main St. Burial will follow in St. James Cemetery.
