Eileen (Whitney) Wilson

Eileen (Whitney) Wilson, age 99, of Manchester, beloved wife of the late Russell W. Wilson, died Wednesday, March 26, 2014, at St Francis Hospital in Hartford.

She was born on April 6, 1914, in Salisbury, Vt., daughter of the late George M. and Mabel C. (Strong) Whitney and has been a resident of Manchester since 1951. Eileen attended schools in Middlebury, Vt., and graduated from Middlebury College Class of 1937. Following graduation she was employed by Aetna Life Insurance Co. in Hartford for 10½ years. While working there, she met her husband, marrying in 1943. After raising her family she taught at Manchester High School for 16 years, retiring in 1979. She received both her master's degree and 6th year of study from the University of Connecticut. She was a longtime active member and former deacon of Center Congregational Church in Manchester. She was a member of the Retired Teacher's Association of Manchester, a member of the Association of Retired Teachers of Connecticut, a member of both the Manchester and Salisbury, Vt., historical societies, and had served several years in the income tax preparation program at the Manchester Senior Citizen Center as well as serving on the Manchester Visiting Nurse and Home Health Care Board. Eileen was very devoted to her family and enjoyed traveling with them, especially to her former Vermont home. She enjoyed reading, sewing, rug hooking, and playing bridge in the Manchester Senior Center Duplicate Bridge Club.

She is survived by her son, Roger W. Wilson, and his wife, Judith, of Bolton; her daughter, Janet W. Prior, and her husband, John, of Manchester; two grandchildren, Dr. Carrie Wojenski and her husband, Dan, of Norwalk and Daniel Prior of Somerville, Mass., as well as many nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, Eileen was predeceased by her brother Harold E. Whitney; foster-brother Lt. Col. Kendall J. Baker USAF; and her niece Nancy (Wilson) Maltez.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 31, at 11:30 a.m. at the Holmes Funeral Home, 400 Main St., Manchester. Burial will follow in the East Cemetery in Manchester. Visitation will be held Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
