Elena Marie Rice

Elena Marie Rice, 31, of South Yarmouth, Mass., and formerly of Manchester, passed away on Jan. 29, 2013, from complications following surgery.

Elena was a wonderful person completely devoid of prejudice and bias. Elena graduated from St. Bridget School in Manchester with high honors and was a presidential scholar, receiving an award from President Bill Clinton. She also was a gifted artist, a math Olympiad, and enjoyed cheerleading and playing basketball for her school team. She was chosen as the class speaker for her commencement. She graduated from Dennis Yarmouth High School with high honors and continued on to Cape Cod Community College. While at 4 C's she totally involved herself in her school and the community. She was in many activities, including President of the Roteracs, National Art Society, Habitat for Humanity, raising funds for A Baby Center, Student Council President, tutoring school children in algebra, and assisting single mothers in obtaining scholarship aid and books, along with many more activities. She received many awards for academic and community accomplishments. Elena graduated with high honors and was a speaker at her commencement. She also attended Bentley College.

Elena is survived by her parents, John and Marie Rice of South Yarmouth, Mass.; along with her beloved son, Anthony; her birth mother, Selina DeSpirt of Connecticut; and three sisters. She also leaves to mourn her passing her aunt, Lisa Scianghetti of Mesa, Ariz., who was like a big sister to her; her uncle, Richard (Dick), and aunt, Barbara Mckenney of Chatham, Mass., with whom she spent countless hours during her childhood playing at Ridgevale Beach, along with many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Friends may call at Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave., South Yarmouth, Mass. on Monday, Feb. 4, 2013 from 5 to 7 p.m.

A Funeral Service will be held in the funeral home on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013 at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in Chandler Gray Cemetery, West Yarmouth, Mass.
