George H. Barton

George H. Barton, 90, of Manchester, formerly of Rockville, beloved husband of the late Lois (Weber) Barton, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2013.

He was born March 28, 1923, in Hartford, son of the late Henry and Henrietta (Smith) Barton. He graduated from Hall High School in West Hartford in 1941. At the age of 19, he joined the United States Marine Corps. He proudly served as part of the 4th Marine Division and was wounded in action on Saipan. He earned the Purple Heart for his bravery. Following military service, George attended Colgate University, where he received his bachelor's degree in 1949. He had a lifelong career as a life insurance agent for Mass Mutual Insurance. He was an avid Pittsburgh Pirates fan, and regularly attended Colgate University sporting events.

He is survived by his children, Thomas N. Barton, and his wife, Mary Beth, of Massachusetts and Anne B. James, and her husband, Paul, of Washington; as well as five grandchildren, Kyle James, Ryan Barton, David Barton, Jonathan Barton, and Kelsey Barton. He was predeceased by John C. Barton, Elizabeth Fisher, Shirley Anderson, and Virginia Killam.

A memorial service will be held at the Ellington Congregational Church, 72 Main St., Ellington, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014. Burial will be held in the spring at Townsend Cemetery, Andover.
