James "Jim" Breen, of Manchester, passed away on Friday, June 7, 2013, surrounded by his family at Manchester Memorial Hospital.
He was born May 18, 1927, in Hartford, the son of Louis and Elizabeth (Brennen) Breen. He grew up in the Parkville section where he played on the Parkville football team. Jim served in both the Merchant Marines and the U.S. Army during World War II
and later with the U.S. Army Military Police. He was a Hartford firefighter
, retiring after 30 years of service. He then worked as a deputy sheriff in the Enfield court system for many years. He was a great lover of golf, though it was not always kind to him. Although he could no longer play, he could still be found at the Manchester Country Club hanging out with his many friends and solving the world's problems. He was a communicant of St. James Church in Manchester and a member of the VFW
in Manchester. Jim was an avid fan of the Washington Redskins, UConn basketball, and the Red Sox.
He leaves to mourn: his loving wife, Joan (Waterhouse) Breen; daughters, Joann (William) Emerson of Coventry, Kathleen (Dennis) O'Neil of Tolland, Marjorie Breen of Manchester, Patricia Breen of Los Angeles, and Colleen (Sean) McDonough of Glastonbury; his grandchildren, Jen, Tara, Kasey, Scott, Bailey, Tucker, Lauren, and Jim; and his great-grandchildren, Zach, Olivia, and Chance. He was predeceased by his son, Richard J. Breen.
Jim's family would like to offer a note of thanks and appreciation to all the girls at Crestfield Rehabilitation Center wing 4, the staff of Manchester Memorial Hospital, and the North Central hospice program at VNHSC.
