James F. McElroy

James F. McElroy, 75, of Suffield, died Jan. 3, 2013, at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield.

A graduate of Tufts University and co-founder of Bloom Energy of Sunnyvale, Calif., he held well over 50 patents with the U.S. government. He was first employed with G.E. in Connecticut, then for a time with United Technologies. After his retirement, he established a series of small companies in the alternative energy field before co-founding Bloom Energy. His true passion was space, and he worked closely as a consultant with NASA and particularly enjoyed working on the Mars missions.

The husband of the late Mary A. (Catanese), Mr. McElroy is survived by a daughter, Lisa M. McElroy, her husband, Rick Blackshaw, and their children Brook, Lily, Carson, and Wyatt; a son, David J. McElroy; nine siblings and their families, Diane Haggard and companion, Stewart Muncey, Peter McElroy and wife, Carleen, Susan Colby and husband, Robert, Nancy Robishaw and husband, Steven, Kevin McElroy and wife, Heather, Linda St. Clair and husband, Charles, Sally Andrukaitis and husband, Phillip, Wendy Tocci and husband, William, and Cathy Padgett and husband, Glenn.

A service to celebrate Jim's life will be held Friday, Jan. 11, at 2 p.m. at the Woodlawn Chapel, adjacent to Woodlawn Cemetery, Concord Road, Acton Center, Mass.
