Kenneth R. Whitman

Kenneth R. Whitman, "Ken the Barber," 84, of Vernon, passed away peacefully Tuesday, May 14, 2013, at Rockville General Hospital.

Born Dec. 28, 1928, in Newport, N.H., he was a son to the late Toivo and Ruth (Pearl) Whitman. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving his country with the U.S. Army. He was the owner/operator of Ken's Barber Shop in Vernon and later Tolland Barbers in Tolland. He was a member of Union Congregational Church in Rockville. He was also a member of the Fayette Freemason Lodge No. 69 where he held a variety of offices, a member of Adoniram Chapter No. 18, and member and past president of the Connecticut Barbers Association. Ken loved people and enjoyed being an usher for UConn sporting events and a volunteer for the Red Cross blood drives. He enjoyed camping, fishing, traveling, square dancing, bowling, and playing cards at the Ellington Senior Center.

He is survived by his son, Gary Whitman and Robin of Vernon; daughter, Pat Whitman of Austin, Texas; grandchildren, Jared and Hannah; and brother, Wilfred Whitman, and his wife, Fredricka, of Ellington; and numerous other loving relatives and friends.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, May 17, 2013, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Ladd-Turkington & Carmon Funeral Home, 551 Talcottville Road, Vernon.

A private burial will be held at the convenience of the family.
