Lawrence E. Wittkofske

Lawrence E. Wittkofske, 89, of Manchester, loving husband for 54 years of Helen (Sibrinsz) Wittkofske, died Monday, March 25, 2013, in Manchester of Alzheimer's and pneumonia.

He was born in Manchester on Feb. 4, 1924, son of Hattie (Gess) Wittkofske and August Wittkofske, and was a lifelong resident, graduating from Manchester High School and Manchester Trade School (now Cheney Tech). He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the Army in Germany. He was employed by the Town of Manchester Water and Sewer Department and became superintendent. He was also employed by the former Griswold & Fuss (now Fuss & O'Neil) and the Hartford Engineering Department. Lawrence was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church and served on the church council and the stewardship committee. He was involved with Sunday school for many, many years due to Helen's interest in the Sunday church school. His hobby was model trains and started a Lionel layout in his youth. As an adult he had an H.O. layout, and a N Gauge layout the size of a ping pong table. He made much of the scenery and even some of the people. The trains were a delight to both young and old.

With his wife, Lawrence is survived by a sister, Dorothy Derynoski of Southington; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Amelia Holmes, and a brother, Elmore Wittkofske. He was very devoted to Helen's nieces and nephews and they of him.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 27, at 11 a.m. at the Concordia Lutheran Church, 40 Pitkin St., Manchester. Burial with military honors will follow in the East Cemetery in Manchester. A visiting hour will be held at the church on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.

It is requested that memorials be made to the Concordia Lutheran Church Building Fund. If you prefer to send flowers it is requested that they be sent to a living person in his memory.
