Mervin "Willie' "Mert" D. Lichtel, 90, of South Windsor, beloved husband of the late Gladys (Freidel) Lichtel, passed away peacefully on Monday, Nov. 26, 2012, at St. Francis Hospital.
Born in Hillsdale, N.Y., one of eight children born to the late George and Ella (Rowe) Lichtel, he grew up and lived in Chatham, N.Y., and East Hartford before moving to South Windsor in 1960. Prior to his retirement in 1981, Mervin was employed at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in East Hartford for 35 years. He was a U. S. Army
veteran of World War II
, serving in the 32nd Infantry Division, Red Arrow. He was a member of the Wapping Community Church. He was over a 50-year member of Columbia Lodge #25, A.F. & A.M. and was a Scottish Rite Mason. Mervin enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening, and working on crossword puzzles. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend who enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
He is survived by his children, Richard Fischer and his wife, Marie, of Boston, Mass., Judith Kohler and her husband, Ron, of Ghent, N.Y., Peter Fischer and his wife, Sharon, of Enfield and Janet Giuliano and her husband, Gene, of Enfield; nine grandchildren, Adam, Scott, Stacy, Tammi, Mike, Melissa, Steven, Brian and Michelle; 13 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and his wife, Mervin was predeceased by four sisters, Erma, Eleanor, Net, and Lita, and three brothers, George, Robert, and Richard.
His family will receive friends for calling hours on Friday, Nov. 30, 2012, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Road, South Windsor, followed by a service at the funeral home beginning at noon. Burial will follow in Center Cemetery, South Windsor with military honors.
