Neva L. (Surber) Slater, 91, of Manchester, widow of Robert H. Slater, died Wednesday, March 19, 2014, at her home after a long illness.
Neva was born Dec. 27, 1922 in Asher, Okla., daughter of Walter and Mabel (Lyon) Surber. She was raised in Oklahoma and was a resident of East Hartford before moving to Manchester in 1968. Neva graduated from Eastern Connecticut State College with a Degree in Early Education in 1968. She was a longtime and faithful member of the North United Methodist Church choir, a teacher in early education, and a member of the National Scrabble Association.
She is survived by her daughter, Virginia Dodd, and her husband, James Dodd Jr. of Bolton; her son, Brian C. Slater of East Hartford; a granddaughter, Jennifer Ensroth of Detroit, Mich.; a brother and two sisters, Carl Surber and Dorothy Yardy, both in Oklahoma, and Arden Lyon of Texas; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 30 at North United Methodist Church, 300 Parker St., Manchester.
Visiting hours are from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday, March 28 at the Holmes Funeral Home, 400 Main St., Manchester. A graveside service will follow at 4 p.m. in the Buckingham Cemetery on Cricket Lane in Glastonbury.
