Sally M. (McMahon) Barbero, 84, wife of 58 years to the late Francis "Frank" Barbero, of Rockville, passed away Wednesday, March 5, 2014, at Hartford Hospital with her family at her side.
She was born May 12, 1929, in Pawtucket, R.I., to the late William and Regina B. (Shillingford) McMahon. Sally and Frank owned and operated the former Rainbow Store in Rockville for many years. She then worked for Nelson's Freightways until retiring. She was active in local, state, and national politics, always preserving a keen interest in the news and political affairs throughout her life. Her other passions included her family and friends, bowling, and UConn women's basketball. St. Patrick's Day was always special to Sally, and she spearheaded the annual dinner to gather family and friends in celebration.
Sally is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Hank Lachut; many cherished nieces and nephews; and close special friend, Rebecca Shohim. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her sisters and brothers-in-law, Regina and Leo Flaherty Jr., and Mary and William F. Luddecke.
Sally's strength, guidance, independent spirit, and Irish feistiness will be deeply missed, and her unwavering love and devotion to family and friends will always be remembered and cherished. FNSB, now together in peace and love.
Family and friends may gather on Tuesday, March 11, at St. Bernard Church in Rockville for a mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at St. Bernard's Cemetery.
