Sherwood Loring Jones

Sherwood Loring Jones, 88, of Glastonbury, beloved husband of Martha (Carter) Jones, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013, at Hartford Hospital.

Woody, as he was known by family and friends, was born on July 5, 1925, in Bangor, Maine, the son of the late Earnest F. and Florence (Carll) Jones. Woody was a veteran, serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a rifleman and mortar man serving with Co. C, 2nd Infantry Regiment, 5th Infantry Division in France, Luxembourg, and Germany. During World War II, he was a prisoner of war from March to April of 1945. Woody was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge. A graduate of Colby College in Maine, Woody worked as an insurance underwriter for Travelers Insurance Co. in Hartford for 37 years. Near the end of his career he left Travelers to work at Johnson & Higgins for five years, providing his expertise as a consultant. After leaving Johnson & Higgins, he worked many years as a part-time consultant with Pension Consultants of Farmington. He very much appreciated his relationship with Pension Consultants. His career with Travelers took him to Chicago in the late 1940s, where he met his wife Martha. There were subsequent stops in Cincinnati and Grand Rapids, before settling in Connecticut. He raised his family in West Hartford for nearly 10 years and then Glastonbury where he lived 47 years. Woody loved being with his family and planned outdoor activities with his family year-round, such as skiing, camping and hiking. He was an avid skier and cherished his time with his friends of the Comey Comets Ski Racing Team. He continued skiing and racing until his early 80s. He was an avid reader, was always completing crosswords and was also an accomplished bridge and tennis player. He enjoyed traveling with his wife.

In addition to his loving wife of 59 years, he is survived by two sons, Stuart M. Jones of Vernon, and Christopher S. Jones of Ellington; two daughters, Sharon A. Jordan, and her husband, Rick, of Vernon, and Catherine C. Rochford, and her husband, James, of Needham, Mass.; his seven beautiful grandchildren, Brittany, Tyler, and Brendan Jones, Heather and Christopher Jordan, and Carly and Jimmy Rochford; his brother, Curtis Jones, and his partner, Betty, of Chapel Hill, N.C.; his sister, Faith Middleton, and her husband, Robert, of Brattleboro, Vt., and several nieces and nephews. Much to his dismay, he was predeceased by his beloved son, Keith Loring Jones, who passed away in 2010 after a spirited battle against pancreatic cancer.

He will always be remembered for his quick wit, joviality, and generous spirit. His family would like to send a special thanks to Marsha Caruso-Bergman, P.A, at the Helen and Harry Gray Cancer Center.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013, at 3 p.m. at the Meetinghouse Hill Cemetery, 580 Orchard St., Brattleboro, Vt., with military honors.
